URBANA – A new invasive species has begun popping up in Illinois, a non-native earthworm that can spread easily. The Jumping Worm lives in the top 3 to 4 inches of soil in wooded areas, garden beds, and lawns. They can be up to 8″ long and thrash about when disturbed, earning them their nickname. Once established, jumping worms can damage plant roots, lawns, or ornamental gardens according to the University of Illinois Extension Office. In an alert put out last week, research specialist Chris Evans says the worms are voracious eaters that decrease soil quality and reduce organic matter. Experts advise not moving or sharing perennial plants and purchasing only heat treated compost.
