The six things we learned from Round 6
By
Contenders have established themselves and early season form is beginning to materialise.
Here’s what we learned from Round 6:
Melbourne are genuine contenders
It was the win they needed to prove their credentials.
The Demons’ 34-point victory over the competition’s bench mark in Richmond should fill the playing group with confidence that they can make a deep September run this year.
Melbourne remain unbeaten after six rounds at 6-0 and face North Melbourne, Sydney, Carlton and Adelaide in their next month of football.
A 10-0 start is well within the realms of possibility and a top four spot beckons for Simon Goodwin’s side.

A record breaking crowd were entertained by a thrilling ANZAC Day clash between historical rivals Collingwood and Essendon.
The crowd of 78,113 was the highest number to attend a sporting event since the COVID pandemic began last March and they saw Essendon ultimately run out 109-85 winners over the Magpies.
Darcy Parish was prolific for the Dons with 42 touches, two goals and the Anzac Day medal while Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti was electric up forward with five goals.
Scott Pendlebury again lived up to his big game reputation with 30 touches for the losing side while Brodie Grundy worked hard for his 19 disposals and 40 hit outs.

Tom Liberatore is the league’s most underrated player.
He might even be the Bulldogs’ most important midfielder.
Through five rounds, it has become clear that from a functional perspective, Liberatore is the cog that allows the Bulldog machine to run smoother than any other. Plenty of club-related discussions circled around the Bulldogs’ incredible, yet almost unnecessary midfield depth, where coach Luke Beveridge would need to continue his trend of having players play out of position to fit everyone in.
