The lockdown will start from April 21
The Maharashtra government is likely to announce complete lockdown starting from 8 pm on April 21, and Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray will make this announcement, said State Health Minister Rajesh Tope said while speaking to reporters in Mumbai.
Tope said that the State cabinet had discussed lockdown and everyone agreed on the need to impose complete lockdown to curb the rising number of Covid-19 cases. Cabinet has told the Chief Minister that lockdown should be started from 8 pm on Wednesday. He said that the State administration is working on the details of the execution.

MUMBAI: Almost 50% of the samples that have tested positive for Covid-19 in the state and were sent from some of the districts for genome sequencing have the newly identified and highly infectious Indian variant of SARS-CoV-2 called B.1.617.
Most of these samples are from Vidarbha and no sample submitted from the city has so far shown the B.1.617 variant, said scientists involved with INSACOG, a grouping of 10 national laboratories carrying out whole genomic sequencing of samples.
The Union health ministry has so far not given specific details about the whole genome sequencing project. A communication on Friday said as of Thursday, 13,614 whole genome sequencing samples had been processed at the 10 INSACOG labs. “Of these, 1,189 samples have tested positive for variants of concern for SARS COV-2 in India. The recovery rate in the State is 81.3 per cent. Maharashtra recorded 61,695 new Covid-19 cases, while 53,335 patients were discharged on Thursday. The State reported 349 deaths and the case fatality rate is 1.63 per cent.
Total 29,59,056 Covid-19 patients have been discharged after full recovery until today, and the recovery rate in the State is 81.3 per cent. Currently, 35,87,478 people are in home quarantine, and 27,273 people are in institutional quarantine. As on today, there are 6,20,060 active cases in the State, with Pune district leading the chart with 1,12,923 active patients.
Private and government hospitals are finding it challenging to cater to the rising need for oxygen.
The State government has asked all major hospitals in the State to set up oxygen plants and directed smaller ones to have oxygen concentrators to treat Covid-19 patients.
The State Health Minister Rajesh Tope said that hospitals with more than 50 beds must have their own oxygen plants. He admitted that the government was struggling to cater to the oxygen requirement.

“The Centre has permitted to bring oxygen from other places including Karnataka, Chhattisgarh and Gujarat. The plan to bring oxygen using tankers is on the cards,” he said.
