The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has called for “absolute” independence of the office of the Attorney General (AG) from the Ministry of Justice to enable it to carry out its prosecutorial functions effectively.
Nana Ofori Owusu, National Chairman of the Party who made the call at a news conference in Accra on Wednesday, said the seeming lack of separation of the office from the Ministry of Justice made it practically impossible and difficult for it to prosecute political corruption cases, especially persons from the ruling government.
Article 88 (1 and 2) of the 1992 Constitution states that: “There shall be an Attorney-General of Ghana who shall be a Minister of State and the principal legal adviser to the Government.
Some agitated Ghanaians threatened to embark on a demonstration on Sunday, May 9 to protest Presdident Akufo-Addo s governance but their plans were foiled by the Police.
The Police stopped them on grounds that there are currently restrictions on public gatherings and for fear of spreading COVID-19 wouldn t allow them to go on their protest march.
The Police acquired a restraining order from the High Court to prohibit the conveners of the protest.
But the action of the Police has received a public backlash and without cowering, a section of the citizens embarked on a virtual protest.
Joining the people to lambast the Police is the National Chairman of the Progressive People s Party (PPP).

#fixthecountry conveners to embark on their protest march irrespective of the COVID-19 restrictions on public gatherings.
The conveners scheduled Sunday, May 9, 2021 for their protest march to register their displeasure with the administration of President Nana Akufo-Addo but they were stopped by the Police.
The Police argued that the protest defies the public gathering restrictions.
Preventing the protesters, the Police acquired a restraining order from the High Court which read the conveners, their associates and all parties interested in taking the protest march are prohibited from embarking on any demonstration on Sunday, 9th May, 2021 or any other date until the restriction on public gathering is lifted by the appropriate authority .

The conveners planned to go on protest march on Sunday, May 9, 2021 but the Police stopped them.
An Accra High Court restrained the conveners following an affidavit filed by the Police against the conveners.
According to the court writ, the conveners, their associates and all parties interested in taking the protest march are
prohibited from embarking on any demonstration on Sunday, 9th May, 2021 or any other date until the restriction on public gathering is lifted by the appropriate authority .
PPP National Chairman, Nana Ofori Owusu has descended heavily on President Nana Akufo-Addo and his government over the plight of the citizenry.
Some citizens have intensely registered their displeasure with the President s administration because they believe he is steering the nation in the wrong direction.
The citizens have been bitterly whining about what they say is the poor governance of the President and have ignited a campaign dubbed
#fixthecountry to convey their grievances to the Head of State, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Among the tall list of demands is for the government to fix the energy challenges, fuel price hikes, poor roads and so forth.
