New Bedford parks: City councilors launch plan to clean pocket parks

NEW BEDFORD    Three city councilors, two businesses and one state representative are partnering up in what might be a last attempt to keep the North End s pocket parks.  Councilor-at-large Ian Abreu announced on Facebook that monthly cleanups for two pocket parks in the North End will start on Saturday, May 8 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. It is my hope and desire that these cleanups will help empower our community to take back ownership of these public resources, Abreu wrote. I would like to give these parks one last opportunity to provide the passive recreational opportunities they were intended for before discussing the possibility of selling them off to private developers.

New Bedford Council Candidate List Continues to Grow [OPINION]

More candidates are joining the 2021 race to be on the New Bedford City Council. The candidates are also raising money – well, most of the candidates are raising money. It comes as no surprise that most of the candidates are looking to get elected to an at-large seat given the upcoming retirement of Deb Coelho from the council. An open seat among the five at-large seats is a rare occurrence. An open seat is even rarer than an incumbent at-large councilor losing re-election. The three most active non-incumbents so far are Matthew Keefer, Jason Mello, and Lisa White. They have been doing outreach to the public and they have been raising campaign funds, which you can see in the list at the bottom of this article.

New Bedford Councilors Want Answers on Public Safety Issues

New Bedford Councilors Want Answers on Public Safety Issues NEW BEDFORD The New Bedford City Council is asking Mayor Jon Mitchell not to decommission Engine 8 or close the downtown police station this fiscal year, with the hope that officials in the meantime will find the money needed to pay for those public safety expenses. The city council voted 11-0 on Thursday to send a letter to Mitchell requesting that his administration and the council work together to find funding for those services that councilors said are vital to the North End and downtown area business district. “We cannot get rid of Engine 8. It’s a vital part of not only Ward 2, but the whole city,” Ward 2 Councilor Maria Giesta said.
