6 NEWPORT, R.I. – The Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Newport Safety Branch has won the fiscal year 2020 Chief of Naval Operations Award for Safety Ashore in the large, non-industrial category. These awards recognize outstanding support and achievement in safety and occupational health. The Safety Branch was recognized for the overall quality of the many innovative programs they manage, including compliance to safety and health standards and hands-on mishap prevention efforts. In 2020, Safety Branch staff increased hazard abatement efforts and implemented practices to help employees achieve the highest level of compliance and maintain a healthy, safe work environment. Through a proactive, comprehensive safety program, Division Newport holds an outstanding record of achievement, due in great part to the diligence taken by the Safety Branch.

6 NEWPORT, R.I., – Kerri Spero of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Newport Graphics and Digital Imaging Branch of the Corporate Operations Department has won first place in the Russell Egnor Navy Media Awards Graphic Design-Digital Art category. This highly competitive, Navy-wide awards program recognizes exceptional work by individuals and communications teams throughout the Navy, and fosters an environment of innovation and growth that leads to more effective communication programs. This is the second consecutive year in which Spero, a resident of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, has won in this awards program. The winning nomination package included a series of four calendar illustrations designed to celebrate women in STEM careers, and depicted in each illustration is a building located on the NUWC Division Newport campus.

Acting Secretary of the Navy Thomas W. Harker and U.S. Sen. Jack Reed, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee overseeing the U.S. Department of Defense, visited the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport on April 6. As part of the Secretary of the Navy’s tour of some of New England’s Navy facilities, Harker and Reed toured the Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (UUV) High Bay workspace for an update on Division Newport’s work in UUVs, torpedoes, submarine-launched systems, marine mammal monitoring, and bio-inspired technologies. Division Newport’s Commanding Officer Capt. Chad Hennings and Technical Director Ron Vien greeted the dignitaries and shared details about the workforce and the expertise that resides within the Command.
