Activists converged on Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf’s home in Mount Wolf, Pa., May 2 to demand the medical release of political prisoner Russell Maroon Shoatz and all ill and elderly prisoners. The action began with a “caravan of love” from nearby York to Mt. Wolf, where the sign-bearing vehicles encircled the block three times before participants held an in-person rally along the sidewalk in front of his home.
In addition to the colorful banners and placards, a scroll bearing the names of 145 organizations including the Prisoners Solidarity Committee of Workers World Party, who had signed a letter demanding Shoatz’ immediate release was unfurled and laid out on the sidewalk.

May Day began in the U.S. in 1884 after labor federations called for worker strikes and protests for the eight-hour day. 400,000 workers answered the call countrywide on May 1, 1886. That year eight worker organizers, some immigrants, were arrested and framed for the May 4 bombing of a Haymarket Square rally in Chicago. Five were sentenced to death; four were executed and a fifth died in his cell. An 1889 international socialist conference declared May 1 International Workers Day, in part to honor the Haymarket Martyrs. The day was revitalized in the U.S. in 2005 by the Black-led Million Worker March, and in 2006 by the Latinx immigrant workers’ mass strike. In 2021 the day was commemorated around the world; Workers World Party helped organize a number of actions across the U.S.

This statement, written by Haiti Action Committee and signed by over 60 organizations, commemorates the 10th anniversary of the return to Haiti of former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide and First Lady Mildred Aristide. It calls for support of the resistance by the Haitian people to the U.S.-backed dictatorship of Jovenel Moise and provides concrete ways for progressive-minded people to take action in solidarity with Haiti.
Ten years ago on March 18, 2011, former president Jean-Bertrand Aristide, his wife and colleague Mildred Trouillot Aristide and their two children returned from forced exile in South Africa. Tens of thousands of people lined the streets of Port-au-Prince and poured into the courtyard of their home to greet them, seeing in their return a renewal of hope for a democratic and just Haiti.
