Those preventable deaths amounted to 44% of the overall count. While the deaths were tragic, the report identified some trends that are improving, said Dr. Mary Ellen Rimsza, a pediatrician who chairs the annual exercise.  Child mortality rates have dropped consistently over the last decade, suggesting that previous prevention tactics have had a positive effect. In 2019, child deaths were down nearly 8% from the previous year.
