Big bets on India: Amazon, OneWeb, 24 others seek nod for space biz | India News


BENGALURU: Within months of India deciding to open up the space sector, at least 22 proposals from Indian firms and institutions and four foreign companies are being formally reviewed by IN-SPACe, the newly formed space regulator. Jeff Bezos’ US-based Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Bharti Group backed UK-based OneWeb are among the firms that have shown interest.
The proposals before IN-SPACe (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre) range from permissions for ground stations, establishing satellite constellations to making and launching satellites, launch vehicles and providing applications.
K Sivan, secretary, Department of Space (DoS), said: “The fact that so many Indian firms, both big companies like L&T and Bharti Group and startups are progressing well is encouraging and in line with our PM’s vision. Interest from foreign firms like Amazon will also help India become a global space hub.” ....

Chennai, Dec 21 : Even though the year 2020 would be known as Covid-19 year, it could also be termed as the defining year for the Indian space sector to put it in a different orbit with the private sector as a co-traveller of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
As a part of that, the Department of Space (DoS) recently signed an agreement with Chennai based small rocket company Agnikul Cosmos Pvt Ltd to access the facilities and technical expertise available in ISRO centres. ....

Cabinet approves Auction of spectrum in 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz and 2500 MHz frequency bands, for a validity period of 20 years
By winning the right to use spectrum through the auction, incumbent telecom service providers will be able to augment their network capacity whereas new players will be able to start their services

The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved guidelines for the next round of spectrum auction which may begin in the last week of January, said Union Minister Prakash Javadekar.
Cabinet approves Auction of spectrum in 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz and 2500 MHz frequency bands, for a validity period of 20 years. A total of 2251.25 MHz is being offered with total valuation of Rs. 3,92,332.70 crores, said Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad. ....

The Union Cabinet is likely to approve on Wednesday guidelines for the next round of spectrum auction which may begin in the last week of January, sources said.
The upcoming auction may not have radiowaves identified for 5G services.
The spectrum auction note has been submitted to the Cabinet. It may come for a decision at Wednesday s meeting, a source said.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) had recommended a plan to auction spectrum worth Rs 5.22 lakh crore. However, some of the spectrum frequencies identified by the DoT for auction are being used by the defence ministry and the Department of Space. ....
