A funeral was held for Jacqueline Zangrilli at Sacred Heart Church in Suffern. The 16-year-old was killed Saturday when the car she was riding in lost control and hit a telephone pole on Route 202. Police say the 17-year-old driver was speeding and under the influence of drugs and alcohol. He is facing multiple charges including manslaughter and vehicular assault.

Dozens of tearful classmates were seen bringing flowers at the scene on Route 202 in Montebello, where 16-year-old Jacqueline Zangrilli died while riding in the backseat of a car that crashed just before 3 a.m. One of the other teens who survived the crash was among those who came by on Monday, his arm bandaged in a cast and overcome with emotion, comforted by his parents.

According to the GoFundMe, organized by Patrice McDonald-Brophy, Jacqueline loved school and was very involved in sports.  She played basketball and field hockey, excelling in both,  McDonald-Brophy said.  Jacqueline leaves behind her family, her close friends, and her former teammates.  Suffern High School is offering to counsel students grieving from the loss. A student death is a difficult and a challenging situation, said Suffern High School Principal Patrick Breen in a statement. This is an incredibly difficult time for our community. Since her passing numerous community and sports organizations have posted Suffern Strong with the Suffern High School logo on their Facebook pages as a way to offer support.

Responding patrol officers observed a vehicle flipped over on its side. The Jaguar had been occupied by five people, police say. The vehicle struck a utility pole, causing power disruption in the area. Four of the occupants, with non-life-threatening injuries, were transported to both Nyack Hospital and Westchester Medical Center. All are younger than 18.
