A LIONHEARTED pooch dashed through the woods to save a lost young girl who was trapped while Tropical Storm Elsa battered Florida. 
On Tuesday, the bloodhound Mercy tracked through heavy gusts and rain-soaked terrain to find the 12-year-old just as Tropical Storm Elsa was buzz sawing through the Southeast.

Deputy Lorette “Choli” Nordelo works the night shift patrolling the Town N’ Country area, where speaking Spanish enables her to connect with people she meets on the job.

Hancock County Sheriff’s deputies charged a Bloomington, Ind., man after investigating a crash on Newbury Neck Road in Surry Saturday.
Ronald Hawkins, 45, was driving south in a 2021 Volvo sport utility vehicle when he came to the end of the public access portion of the road and ran into a large rock wall and metal gate.
“This caused significant damage to the rock wall and gate,” said Deputy Dan Harlan. “There was extensive damage to the vehicle, and it was towed from the scene.”
“After further investigation into the crash, it was determined that Hawkins had been drinking alcohol,” Harlan said. ....

ELLSWORTH A possible prowler in Surry turned out to be animals eating from bushes against the residence, which made sounds as though someone was there, Hancock County Sheriff’s Deputy Mariza Gionfriddo reported.
Gionfriddo checked the residence on Feb. 17 and found numerous animal tracks but no human footprints. “The complainant was thankful for the response,” the deputy said.
Citizen assists
A woman walked away from an assisted living facility in Hancock Feb. 15 and the staff was concerned about her well-being due to the cold temperatures and impending inclement weather. Gionfriddo located the woman, who didn’t want to return to the facility and asked for an ambulance to get to a hospital. ....
