PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) The moment stands out as among the most famous at The Players Championship. Twenty years ago this week, Tiger Woods made a 60-foot birdie putt from the back of the island green on the par-3 17th to a front pin in the third round.
Woods went on to win on Monday, and then two weeks later won the Masters to hold all four majors at the same time.
The video, replayed endlessly in the weeks leading up to the tournament, features NBC analyst Gary Koch saying, “Better than most,” his voice rising each of the three times he uttered the phrase until the ball disappeared in the cup.

Rory McIlroy, Jason Day, Justin Thomas, Tony Finau, Patrick Reed, Tommy Fleetwood, Scottie Scheffler, Carlos Ortiz, and Cameron Champ rocked similar versions of his signature Sunday-red shirt and black pants. Billy Horschel had “TW” etched on his hat while Matt Kuchar, Jason Day and Bryson DeChambeau played with golf balls stamped with “TIGER.”

A transcendent golfer occupies our head space like no other athlete, thanks to the unadorned intimacy and longevity afforded by the sport. We stand mere feet away from them on the tee box. We grow old with them. We play their game, or a lesser, mortal version of it, squeezing in 18 holes on Sunday mornings before settling in for the great champion s final round.
