Cancer Foundation of Santa Barbara Names New Board Officers

Housing and Development Newsletter Kristen Blabey will begin her term as board secretary. A partner at Price, Postel & Parma, she specializes in estate planning, probate and trust administration. She is also the chair of the Cancer Foundation’s outreach and stewardship committee. The role of treasurer will be held by Patricia MacFarlane, who joined the Cancer Foundation Board of Trustees in 2018 and has served as the finance chair since 2019. For the past 20 years, she has served as a community volunteer and is a former board president of the Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara and the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History.

When institutions abruptly shut down in March, faculty pivoted to redesign their classes in the absence of facilities and ready access to materials. As we approach a full year of quarantine, I asked full-time faculty members at UCLA and Otis College of Art and Design to reflect on what has been working and what’s had to change about teaching studio art practice in the shift online.

California substitute shortage compounded by pandemic could keep some schools closed

A critical shortage of substitute teachers during the pandemic may make it difficult for some California school districts to reopen campuses or to keep open schools already offering in-person instruction. A sharp decline in applications for substitute teaching credentials since January, as well an exodus of already credentialed substitutes, have left some districts unable to keep classrooms open, especially as more teachers are quarantined after potential exposure to Covid-19.  Substitute pools at school districts are being drained, in part, because temporary teachers are tired of waiting to be called for the scarce jobs available during distance learning or are uncomfortable with the technology required. Some substitutes in districts that have reopened campuses fear returning to the classroom during the pandemic or can’t find child care for children who are home half the week in hybrid instruction.
