CHED denies withholding CSU s Smart Campus project

CHED (MANILA BULLETIN) In a Facebook post, CSU Vice President Ranhilio Callangan Aquino said the university was promised development of a Smart campus by CHED Commissioner Perfecto Alibin, but was “withheld when CHED wanted to take over governance of the university.” CHED Chairman Prospero De Vera III responded to Aquino, saying the Smart Campus project funded by Bayanihan 2 “prioritized project proposals from state universities and colleges [SUCs] that participated in the surveys on connectivity and did not have unliquidated fund transfers.” De Vera said CSU has unliquidated fund transfers from CHED: P86,310 past due for 31-90 days; P18,334 past due for 91-365 days; P71,976.114.25 past due to over one year; and P1,232,724.76 past due over three years.

Angara said he is looking at expanding the coverage of Senate Bill No. 961 or the proposed Pensionado Act, which he filed in 2019 to cover high school graduates. The senator noted there are many Filipino students who are highly intelligent and skilled and who have the potential to pursue higher education in prestigious universities overseas. But because of the high financial cost that studying overseas entails, many students are forced to shelve their plans and lose the opportunity.

In a media briefing on Wednesday, Bello proposed that the country do away with board and bar exams, saying the several years of education and the accompanying tests students go through before graduating are enough to prepare them for work. Bello said he also floated the idea during a meeting with the Philippine Nurses Association and the Board of Nursing. He added he is considering recommending the measure to Congress.
