Harper Woods hosted its own vaccination events, giving out the first of two Pfizer-produced shots on March 4 and the second on March 25, at the Wayne County Community College District Mary Ellen Stempfle University Center. It was used as a point of distribution by the county health department thanks to efforts by local officials. ....
Redistricting commission chooses Democratic, Republican attorneys Image credit EzumeImages | iStock / Getty Images Plus The Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission unanimously selected separate Democratic and Republican law firms to serve as its legal counsel, avoiding a key pitfall that opened an irreparable rift on the commission a decade ago and set the stage for months of partisan acrimony. After several hours of interviews, the commissioners took less than a half hour to reach an agreement on which of four firms to select. Ballard Spahr will serve as the commission’s Democratic co-counsel and Snell & Wilmer will be the Republican co-counsel. Going into Tuesday’s meeting, the commission hadn’t made a final decision on whether to pick one firm to represent it or two firms who would be Democratic and Republican co-counsel, though the commissioners had been openly leaning toward the latter, following the precedent set by the first two AIRCs. Arizona redistricting panel picks executive director By BOB CHRISTIEMarch 17, 2021 GMT PHOENIX (AP) A top staffer for Phoenix City Councilman Jim Waring has been chosen to be the executive director of the commission that will redraw Arizona’s political district lines this year. The five-member commission chose Brian Schmitt for the job after interviewing five finalists in a day-long session Tuesday. The 3-2 vote to hire Schmitt, who was linked to Republican campaigns last year and in 2018, was opposed by the two Democratic members of the commission. But in his interview, Schmitt said he had been asked “as kind of a one-off” to help organize last year’s traditional Republican campaign finale at the Yavapai County Courthouse in Prescott. Federal records from former Sen. Martha McSally’s campaign showed he received a payment of more than $63,000 three days after the Nov. 3, 2020, general election. ....
