Large-scale genetic study sheds light on the causes of hemorrhoids (piles)

Large-scale genetic study sheds light on the causes of hemorrhoids (piles) Research Centers Found at the very end of the digestive tract, hemorrhoids are blood filled cushions that help contain stool and control defecation in humans. Often confusing, hemorrhoids is also what we usually call hemorrhoidal disease (or piles), which is when hemorrhoids swell, causing pain, itching and sometimes bleeding, thus limiting everyday activities. While they mostly remain mild enough to be resolved with over-the-counter treatments, more severe forms of hemorrhoids require surgical treatment associated with considerable disease burden. Many risk factors have been suggested including a sedentary lifestyle, obesity, reduced dietary fiber intake, spending excess time on the toilet or straining during defecation, strenuous lifting and others, with several being controversially reported. Possibly due to their intimate and embarrassing nature, hemorrhoidal disease has been generally u

2005 to 2018 Saw Drop in Incidence Rate of Stroke for Over 50s

Feb 11, 2021 WEDNESDAY, Feb. 10, 2021 (HealthDay News) Among older adults, the incidence rate of stroke decreased from 2005 to 2018, while stroke mortality decreased for younger and older adults, according to a study published online Feb. 10 in Neurology. Nils Skajaa, from Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark, and colleagues examined incidence rates and mortality risks for patients aged 18 to 49 years (younger adults) and aged 50 years or older (older adults) with a first-time ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, or subarachnoid hemorrhage using the Danish Stroke Registry and Danish National Patient Registry for 2005 to 2018. A total of 8,680 younger adults and 105,240 older adults were identified with ischemic stroke or intracerebral hemorrhage. The researchers found that in younger adults, the incidence rate of ischemic stroke (per 100,000 person-years) remained steady (ischemic stroke: 20.8 in 2005 and 21.9 in 2018; intracerebral hemorrhage: 2.2 in 2005 and 2.5 in 20

Back to Healio According to recently published results, the “true cumulative incidence” of hip dislocation, including revisions and closed reductions, after primary total hip arthroplasty is 3.5%, a 50% increase compared with register-coded dislocations. A group of researchers from Denmark used the Danish Hip Arthroplasty Register to identify 31,105 primary THAs from 2010 to 2014 with at least 2 years of follow-up. Additionally, they identified dislocations and matched diagnoses with procedure codes using the Danish National Patient Register and performed multiple logistic regression analysis to analyze risk factors.

Boys born to overweight mothers 40pc more likely to be infertile, study suggests

Boys born to overweight mothers 40pc more likely to be infertile Reducing obesity in pregnancy could help to preserve fertility later in life, researchers have said 6 January 2021 • 3:22pm Boys who are born to overweight mothers could be 40 per cent more likely to be infertile in adulthood, new research suggests. Obesity causes a number of changes in the body which can also impact on a growing foetus – leading to inflammation. It is believed resulting hormone disruptions or mineral deficiency also slow the unborn child s development. This latest research, published in Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica, found sons whose mothers had a BMI (body mass index) of 25 or more pre-pregnancy face a 40 per cent greater risk of infertility.
