Sheila Brown
Sheila Brown, longtime West Seattle environmental activist and Education Program Supervisor at
Camp Long for the past 17 years, has died. Sheila was responsible for initiating the partnership with 4H that resulted in the building of the Challenge course at Camp Long. She was active in race and social justice issues at the City, and committed to getting kids of all backgrounds to appreciate and experience the natural world. She helped create the
Leaders in Environment, Equity, and Facilitation (LEEF) program for developing BIPOC youth leadership in environmental education. The program has recently been expanded so that youth leaders will be employed to lead environmental programming for the Parks Department.
Whatâs the Buzz on PNW Pollinators?!
In our next iteration of DNDAâs Wetland Workshops, we will be going into the realm of the tiny! On Saturday, 4/24, we will explore the world of the tiny winged beasts tasked with the enormous responsibility of pollinating 80% of our food crops. We’ll learn about the diversity of local pollinators, their role in our ecosystems, and how we can best support and advocate for their health and preservation. Additionally, we will be privy to some of the hottest community-driven efforts to aid in this important work.

Local nonprofits have been called on to help sustain the community more than ever this past pandemic year – but they’ve also had to fight for funding, without in-person galas, with many routine donors struggling. But they’re coming up with creative ways to keep going. The
Delridge Neighborhoods Development Association has launched its major spring fundraiser by counting down to its online
“Destination Delridge: Live from the Heart” event at 7 pm March 13th. Everyone who donates in the days leading up to the event will get a ticket to the event. DNDA hopes to raise $90,000 to sustain the art, nature, and neighborhood programs it continues to present. You can donate and/or buy a ticket (with a dinner option!) by going here.
