Angelo State University Celebrates the New Mayer Museum
 
SAN ANGELO, TX – Angelo State University officially dedicated its new Mayer Museum during a ribbon cutting ceremony Friday, and the facility will be open to the public beginning the morning of Saturday, May 22.
The approximately $17 million, 32,000-square-foot facility is named for longtime ASU supporters Richard and B.J. Mayer  and is located at 2501 W. Avenue N in the center of the ASU campus. It is the new home of the ASU West Texas Collection and supports ASU student art programs with classrooms, specialized labs for graphic design, sculpture and ceramics, and student gallery space, along with faculty and staff offices and support spaces. ....

Almost from the time when Baylor University began classroom instruction in May 1846, Baylor students have honed their abilities to reason, research and defend ideas and policies through meeting their peers in formal debates.
In the University’s early days in Independence from 1845-1886, and during the first four decades of its residence in Waco beginning in 1886, the student literary societies  ––  the Philomathesians, the Erisophians and others   ––  dominated much of student extracurricular life. In the absence of intercollegiate athletics or other modern entertainments, debates held each month within the societies, or debates held between students representing rival literary societies, became some of the most popular events on campus. ....

WACO, Texas What started as an ordinary warm day on May 11, 1953 turned into a deadly one after an F5 tornado made a direct hit on Waco.
In just a matter of minutes, the tornado that was believed to have wind speeds of more than 300 mph killed 114 people and injured about another 600.
It transformed homes and businesses into rubble and dust, reshaping Waco s landscape and causing a whopping $50 million in property damage, or just over $487 million today. ....

Baylor Celebrates 2020, 2021 Graduates with In-Person Commencement at McLane Stadium


Commencement ceremonies May 6-8 at McLane Stadium on the banks of the Brazos River.
According to documents in The Texas Collection, the last time a Baylor commencement was held outside was on May 27, 1955, in what was then called Baylor Stadium (later renamed Floyd Casey Stadium).
President Linda A. Livingstone, Ph.D., will preside over the outdoor ceremonies, beginning at 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Thursday, May 6, for May, August and December 2020 graduates, whose ceremonies last year were canceled or held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This spring s graduates then will walk the stage during ceremonies at 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Friday, May 7, and Saturday, May 8. ....
