Deanna Cantrell never thought she d be a police officer, let alone a police chief. I did not like police growing up, the Fairfield police chief told the Bay Area Reporter. I grew up underprivileged in New Mexico, in a household with a lot of violence, so police came quite a few times and I didn t care for them. So, if you ask anyone who knew me then, nobody would have thought that d be my path. But Cantrell, a 50-year-old lesbian, became the first woman and the first LGBTQ person in her position last October. She said her feelings toward the police began to change after a chance encounter with a stranger at a party decades ago.

Santa Barbara asking for community input in search for new police chief

Santa Barbara seeks community input during search for next police chief SANTA BARBARA, Calif.-The City of Santa Barbara is looking for community input before hiring its 29th Chief of Police. Former Police Chief Lori Luhnow retired in February. Interim Chief Bernard Melekian was sworn in on March 1, but isn t interested in the permanent position. The Police Chief Recruitment community survey on Survey Monkey is open through Monday April 19. Responses are intended to help city leaders with the recruitment process which could take six months. City Administrator Paul Casey said Santa Barbara is following the lead of San Luis Obispo. SLO launched a similar survey late last year to fill the vacancy left by Deanna Cantrell.
