North Carolina judge refuses to release body-cam footage of police killing of Andrew Brown Jr.
North Carolina judge Jeff Foster refused Wednesday to release the body-camera footage of the police killing of Andrew Brown Jr., agreeing with prosecutors to delay making the footage public for at least 30 days. The only release scheduled was to the family and one lawyer in 10 days under the condition that they do not release it to the public.
The lawyer for the police argued that the shooting was justified, and the argument, accepted by the judge, was that he did not want body-camera footage shown until a possible trial of the officers who killed Brown. Seven officers involved in the shooting have been placed on leave, but no criminal charges have yet been brought against them. ....

Police in California are under fire over the death of a Latino man who was pinned to the ground for more than five minutes in a video-recorded arrest.
The death in Alameda unfolded the same day a jury in Minneapolis began deliberating in the George Floyd case.
Autopsy findings on the cause of death have not been released, but the family of 26-year-old Mario Gonzalez blamed police, accusing them on Tuesday of using excessive force and escalating what should have been a minor encounter with the unarmed man.

Mario Gonzalez died on April 19 after being pinned on the ground by police officers for 5 minutes.
His family say he was a father of a 4-year-old boy, and sole caregiver to his autistic brother, 22.

Officers in Alameda death used lowest degree of force, attorney says

ALAMEDA, Calif. - An attorney for three Alameda police officers on leave in the wake of the in-custody death of Mario Gonzalez said Wednesday that they used the lowest degree of force possible as he struggled with them.
These officers were here to help, said attorney Alison Berry Wilkinson.
The three officers were trying to detain Gonzalez, 26, at a small park near South Shore Center when Gonzalez, who weighs about 250 pounds, pulled the officers to the ground and struggled with them, Wilkinson said.
Gonzalez soon lost consciousness and died. The cause of his death is under investigation. ....
