It seems almost inevitable that Waylon Payne – the son of country singer Sammi Smith, who had a hit in the early 70s with Help Me Make It Through the Night, and Jody Payne, a longtime guitarist for Willie Nelson – would end up making music. But growing up with two famed-musician parents also came with its own challenges. On his new album, Blue Eyes, The Harlot, The Queer, The Pusher and Me, Waylon draws directly from those experiences, his struggles with addiction and his journey to sobriety.
The first song we hear in this session is the album cut of the song Sins of the Father, a track that gives a bird s-eye overview of Waylon s story. In it, he sings about his dad, but first begins with a recording of the voice of his best friend s son Lake, who helped inspire Waylon to deal with his addiction.

Both in his music and in interviews for the record, he s shared his experience of getting addicted to and sober from meth, as well as the challenges and enduring friendships that he encountered along the way.
Payne s familial past also plays a central role in his music not just the country music legacy that he was born into as the son of Help Me Make It Through the Night star Sammi Smith and Willie Nelson guitarist Jody Payne, but also as a kid who endured abuse from a family member and rejection when he came out as gay.
Kris Kristofferson surprised fans and the music industry on Wednesday (Jan. 27) with the announcement that he had quietly retired in 2020. The music icon played what turned out to be the final full concert of his career on Jan. 30, 2020, and footage is available online.
The 84-year-old singer-songwriter continued to record and tour well into his later years, giving solo performances and also touring with the members of Merle Haggard s legendary band, the Strangers. They backed him up at his final show, which took place in the Stardust Theater onboard the Norwegian Pearl during the fifth annual Outlaw Country Cruise.
