Kotzebue s Tracy Bell among 5 finalists for Alaska teacher of the year

KOTZ Radio 720 AM This year, five Alaska teachers were named finalists for Alaska teacher of the year.  Tracy Bell, an elementary school teacher in Kotzebue, was among them.  Growing up in St. Johns, Michigan, Bell initially went to college to become a nurse. But she found herself jealous of her friends who were studying education. “My roommate was going to school to become a teacher,” Bell said. “Just seeing the work she was doing, and how exciting and enthusiastic she was about it, nursing didn’t feel right. So that’s when I decided, ‘Let me try teaching.’” Bell initially was going to be a high school teacher, but she later decided elementary school teaching was her path. At a job fair, she met with a representative from the Northwest Arctic Borough School District. Though rural Alaska was very different from the Lower 48, Bell felt she’d be able to adapt.

Groups unites around making Auburn more welcoming to all

To the editor: I am a mother of three living in Auburn. I was born in Auburn, raised as the youngest in a family with five older sisters that all graduated from DeKalb, and now, I raise my family in this small town. I’ve always called Auburn my “home.” When I was young, I can remember the Klan rally being held downtown around the courthouse square. I remember myself walking down and standing at a distance, not knowing what I was witnessing. Members in their hoods and robes walking around the square chanting words about things I did not understand. Large tanker trucks protecting their speakers as they spoke words of their beliefs over the loudspeaker for all the town to hear; chanting, yelling.
