Shameful Compromise at UN Security Council on Syria Cross-Border Aid: PHR - Syrian Arab Republic

“Shameful Compromise” at UN Security Council on Syria Cross-Border Aid: PHR Format In response to today’s UN Security Council vote on cross-border aid to Syria, the following statement is attributable to Susannah Sirkin, director of policy at Physicians for Human Rights: “The United Nations Security Council has reached a shameful compromise to allow just one international border crossing for lifesaving aid to the besieged people of Syria. The Security Council could not even guarantee the continuation of the Bab al-Hawa crossing for a meager 12 months, instead agreeing to only six months before being subjected to a renewal review. While thankfully some aid will flow through the Bab al-Hawa crossing, women, men, and children in other areas of the country have been abandoned.

UN extends Syria cross-border assistance in compromise with Russia

July 9, 2021 The UN Security Council on Friday voted to renew a cross-border aid operation into northwest Syria, averting further humanitarian disaster in the war-torn region but falling short of what relief organizations said was needed.  Following a last-minute compromise between Russia and the United States, the 15-member council unanimously agreed to extend the UN’s use of the Bab al-Hawa crossing on the Syrian-Turkish border by six months, followed by another six-month extension subject to a secretary-general report on cross-line aid delivery. The fate of the United Nations’ aid operation in northwest Syria, which was set to expire Saturday, rested with Syria’s veto-wielding ally, Moscow. The Russian government has argued that humanitarian assistance should be supplied through Damascus, rather than across its borders.
