Opinion: Taxing the rich is justified, necessary, says Morristown man

Wednesday, May 5, 2021 - 8:52 am To the Editor: I have no doubt there is plenty to disagree with in New York State’s 2021 budget, but one thing that should not be questioned is the entirely justified and necessary tax increase on the rich. I promise, it will not hurt them. They will still have more money than they need. And if you’re reading this here in the North Country, one of the poorer areas of New York State, chances are your state income tax rate will not be raised at all. Right now, the very tippy top New York State marginal tax rate is 8.82 percent, which is only paid on income for single earners above $1.077 million. They pay the same 4 percent on their first $8,500 as everyone else, the same 4.5 percent on income $8,501 to $11,700, the same 6.09 percent on income from $21,401 to $80,650 as everyone else, and so on. The higher taxes only kick in on their excess income.

Home rule is still a real thing, and this is how it’s done.

Opinion: Trump supporters remind me of Lloyd Christmas, says Morristown man

Wednesday, January 6, 2021 - 9:01 am To the Editor: Friendly limousine driver Lloyd Christmas, stomach aflutter and confusing genders, asks beautiful socialite Mary Swanson, “What do you think the chances are of a guy like you and a girl like me ending up together?” “Not good,” Mary softly responds. “Not good like one out of a hundred?” Lloyd asks. “I’d say more like one out of a million.” Lloyd processes Mary’s answer before shouting with glee, “So you’re telling me there’s a chance!” Back in what I’m not so sure is the real world, during this past 4th of July weekend on the St. Lawrence River in Alexandria Bay and waterways around the nation, boaters paraded in groups flaunting Trump flags and banners. You wouldn’t think Trump flotillas would bring to mind comedy classic Dumb and Dumber, but they do. Lloyd Christmas, like millions of similarly cerebral but far less lovable MAGA Americans, cannot face reality. Mary Swanson,
