Covid-19: 22 dead in Karnataka's Chamarajanagar district over oxygen shortage

Deaths were not linked to the non-availability of oxygen, clarifies official.
Oxygen shortage in Chamarajanagar, the southernmost district in Karnataka, has triggered 22 deaths on Sunday night.
According to the district administration, about 22 Covid-19 patients who were on ventilator have died.
Deputy Commissioner of Chamarajanagar M R Ravi, confirming the deaths, clarified that the deaths were not linked to the non-availability of oxygen. However, the district found it challenging to source oxygen from the neighbouring Mysuru district.
The suppliers, who were under pressure to meet Mysuru’s requirements, found it difficult to ensure regular supply to Chamarajanagar.
On hearing the news, Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Monday morning, took details on the incident over phone from the deputy commissioner of Chamarajanagar district. ....

Chamarajanagar due to alleged
district hospital in the last 24 hours, officials said.
A pall of gloom descended on the Chamarajanagar district hospital as the grieving kin of the deceased gathered after hearing the news.
Family members of the dead also staged a demonstration at the hospital and alleged there was a shorten of oxygen and raised slogans.

Chamarajanagar district in-charge Minister S Suresh Kumar, who is also the Primary and Secondary Education Minister, said he has ordered a death audit report from the district administration into the incident. ....

The Opposition Congress has demanded a judicial probe into the death of 23 COVID-19 patients at the district hospital in Chamarajanagar, allegedly owing to shortage of oxygen.
Speaking to reporters after a virtual meeting of the Congress Legislature Party, Leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah demanded the probe by a committee headed by a district court judge. The probe by IAS officer and KSRTC Managing Director Shivayogi Kalasad would not bring out real facts and provide justice to families who had lost their members, he said.
Besides resignation of Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa, Health and Family Welfare Minister K. Sudhakar and district in-charge Minister S. Suresh Kumar for the tragedy, the Congress leader demanded compensation of ₹25 lakh to the families for the loss of lives. The officials who were responsible for the deaths should be suspended, he demanded. ....

Mysuru, May 3 (IANS) Hours after coming under fire from Karnataka Education Minister S. Suresh Kumar, Mysuru Deputy Commissioner Rohini Sindhuri on Monday clarified through a statement that there was no delay from Mysuru in the supply of oxygen to neighbouring Chamarajnagar.

The Bengaluru-based local commerce platform eSamudaay and JSS Rural Incubation Skill and Development Centre (JSS RISDC) will collaborate to work with local entrepreneurs and farmers in Chamarajanagar to produce chemical-free jaggery.
This is part of an initiative to give thrust to rural entrepreneurship with digital and technological intervention and to scale up local businesses and generate employment.
eSamudaay and JSS RISDC have identified the producers and intend to restore the traditional jaggery production units called
aalemanes. ....
