The San Luis Obispo community gathered for a walk on the Cal Poly campus Tuesday in honor of Kristin Smart, who has been missing now for 25 years.
Cal Poly junior Tessa Witkofsky set up the walk for Smart, taking place at the corner of Foothill Blvd. and Crandall Way and ending at Santa Lucia Hall, the location where the 19-year-old freshman was last seen.
âThere was talk of starting a walk on the Kristin Smart Facebook page and I really wanted to make it happen, Witkofsky said, adding she felt connected to Smartâs story and decided to make an impact by leading the walk.
For the first time in more than two decades, arrests and clues about what may have happened to the college student who disappeared in 1996, and whose remains have not been found.
On the morning of April 13, just hours after Paul and Ruben Flores were arrested for their alleged involvement in Kristin Smart’s disappearance and death, Cal Poly University freshman Michelle Mueller cried and lit a candle for Smart.
Smart was a Cal Poly freshman when she disappeared in May 1996 after attempting to return to her dorm room after a party on Memorial Day weekend. She was last seen with Paul Flores, another Cal Poly freshman, who reportedly said he’d walk with Smart to her Muir Hall dorm room.
Now 44, Paul Flores is charged with first-degree murder, although Smart’s body has not been recovered. She was declared dead in 2002. Paul Flores’ 80-year-old father, Ruben, is being charged with accessory to the murder after the fact. Both have entered not-guilty pleas, and Ruben Flores was ordered released on $50,000 bail Wednesday.

Cal Poly students, led by freshman Michelle Mueller, honored Kristin Smart with a candlelight vigil Tuesday night.
In light of Paul and Ruben Flores being arrested early in the morning, Mueller decided to take time to remember the Smart family.
Michelle Mueller said, âHonestly I got a little emotional hearing that Paul and his dad got arrested. I put a tiny little candle outside of the Santa Lucia building where I live.â
Mueller said her vigil was originally supposed to be with only her friends.
