Photo: PA Hospitals in east London are struggling under the pressure of rising Covid-19 cases - one trust is seeing more coronavirus patients than at the peak of the first wave. Barking, Havering & Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust - which runs King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford - were caring for 300 patients with the virus last Friday (December 18). It is the only trust in London to have surpassed the number of patients it had during the peak of the first wave, which was 245.

Health workers warned that hospitals are already struggling to cope, with the peak of a long winter yet to hit. National Health Service (NHS) leaders have warned that frontline services will come under even more intense strain in the next few weeks as the pressures of treating COVID patients during the height of winter will be compounded by the numbers of NHS staff who are themselves off work because of the virus.
