According to the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department, the alarm sounded multiple times Sunday night due to the malfunction. Technicians were notified, and the siren was eventually disconnected. County EMA director Jim Pirtle said the tone that continued to sound throughout the evening was for a hazmat spill and was not the tornado siren. As of 9:40 p.m. Sunday, there were not active warnings in the Sullivan County area. Pirtle also explained that the warning sirens are used to notify those outdoors, especially at the nearby Sullivan Park and Lake, to take shelter in the event of an emergency. He encouraged residents to download a weather app to stay up-to-date on severe weather in the area.
