As is always the case, the Minnesota Vikings signed about a dozen undrafted free agents immediately after the 2021 draft. That said, one of these players is an unlikely recruit based on his age and position played.
The Vikings recently announced that they signed 30 year old punter Zach Von Rosenberg out of LSU. You read that right, a 30 year old rookie. As it stands, he’s tied for the fifth-oldest player on the Minnesota roster.
As you can imagine, Zach has a unique story. He came out of Zachary High School (Louisiana) in 2009 ranked as the 41st-best pitching prospect in the country. He signed a contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates and played on minor league teams for several years. Eventually, Zach left baseball and made his way to college at LSU. To further complicate his story, he started as a tight end and later converted to punter.

Liberty Magnet High School (formerly Lee High School) and Baton Rouge Magnet High School, both part of the EBR Parish school system, were ranked No. 8 and No. 6 in the state, respectively. As usual, Benjamin Franklin High School in New Orleans came in at No. 1. Just two Louisiana schools were ranked in the nationâs top 100âBenjamin Franklin and Patrick F. Taylor Science and Technology Academy in Westwego.Â
Zachary High School and the LSU Laboratory School made the stateâs top 20, according to the list.Â

The lefty possesses an unorthodox stylel. He averaged 44 yards on 59 punts and pinned opponents inside the 20-yard line 27 times in 2020. Possesses tremendous leg strength and hang time; also serves as holder for kicks. He converted from quarterback, to tight end, to kicker. Was drafted by MLB and will be a 30-year old rookie.
Background:
Von Rosenberg spent six seasons playing in the minor leagues as a pitcher. He compiled a 15-25 record. In his final season of baseball in 2014, Von Rosenberg went 2-2 with a 3.38 ERA and struck out 25 batters in 37.1 innings. Von Rosenberg cited injuries as the main reason why he decided to walk away from baseball, according to The Advocate. Moved from Lake Charles, Louisiana to Zachary in 2009 due to Hurricane Rita.
