Time was running out for the two separatist fighters – and they knew it.
Bullet holes riddled the corrugated metal wall of the house where they hunkered down during their final hours.
Dozens of Thai government security personnel had surrounded it after the men inside shot dead 27-year-old Nopparit Sukson, a member of the Thai paramilitary forces. His body lay meters away on a forested slope at the edge of Krong Pinang, a village in Yala, a province in Thailand’s troubled Deep South.

A taxi driver was shot dead by a fellow motorist following a road rage incident in Bangkok s Bang Na district on Monday.
Pickup truck driver Winai Boonpayoong, 53, allegedly admitted shooting dead taxi driver Peerapong Suwan, 52.
Police say Mr Winai cut in front of the taxi, angering Mr Peerapong.
The two vehicles were then forced to stop on Thepparat Road, at which point Mr Winai said Mr Peerapong got out of his vehicle and threatened him with a metal rod.
As Mr Peerapong walked towards him, Mr Winai saif he reached for his gun and shot him, killing him instantly.

YALA: Two insurgents and a ranger were killed in a firefight between a government security force and armed militants in Krong Pinang district on Tuesday afternoon, police said.
A combined unit of civilians, police and soldiers moved into two villages, Batu Buela and Bae Chaeng, in tambon Sa-e, Krong Pinang district, about 3.40pm. They were acting on information that suspected insurgents wanted under court warrants were hiding out there.
