Montgomery County recognizes May as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month

NORRISTOWN — Montgomery County’s Asian and Pacific Islander community was formally recognized as the Montgomery County Commissioners presented a proclamation designating May as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. “It’s been a wonderful relationship that the AAPI community has been building in Montgomery County, and I m so honored to receive this proclamation. Thank you so much for your recognition,” said Sharon Hartz, president of the Korean American Association of Greater Philadelphia. First established in 1992, Congress passed legislation featuring May as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, according to the proclamation. Approximately 8 percent of Montgomery County residents are of Asian and Pacific Islander descent.

Lawrence, along with 18 other state and local representatives, were appointed to this year’s The NewDEAL class, which stands for Developing Exceptional American Leaders. “We are in a unique moment for state and local leaders as we must find solutions for the urgent challenges created by COVID-19 while not losing focus on longer-term issues that will also affect Montgomery’s economic security for decades to come,” Lawrence said in a statement. “I look forward to sharing lessons with and learning from other leaders who are setting the standard for effective governance, and I am excited to be part of NewDEAL’s efforts to expand opportunities for Americans in communities nationwide.”
