The Grundy County Sheriff’s Office and Illinois Department of Children and Family Services are investigating the death of a two-year-old child that occurred at a house on North Cedar Street
Nine charges were filed against the man who was in a standoff against Grundy and Will County authorities. The Coal City Police Department and Grundy County Pro-Active Unit were called to a domestic battery incident at 55 Elm Street shortly before 2:30 p.m. on April 26
th.
Police officials say James Hammen, 46, of Coal City allegedly battered a female who was able to get out of the house. Authorities said Hammen refused to vacate the residence and threw weapons such as axes and swords at officers.
Police officials tried to negotiate with Hammen to come out, but to no avail. Grundy County Sheriff Ken Briley said the Will County SWAT team was then deployed. Hammen gave himself up to authorities around 5:20 p.m. and no injuries were reported.Â
