The 1,500-metre freestyle continues to be Sterling King’s bread and butter.
The member of the Prince George Barracudas set a new long course provincial record in the event at the B.C. championships, held Thursday to Sunday in Richmond.
King’s time of 17 minutes and 53.60 seconds (17:53.60) shattered the old 11 and 12-year-old boys 1,500m freestyle mark of 17:55.74 set by Brent O’Connor.
“He knew he was going to do it, for sure,” Barracudas assistant coach Jason Smith said. “By the time he finished the next person that came in was a full minute behind him. That’s about 40 metres, and long course swimming, that’s a lot.”
