In contrast, with Vietnam it was $81.3 billion, Malaysia $59.2 billion, Thailand $52.7 billion, Singapore $91.6 billion, Cambodia $5.9 billion, India $146.1 billion and China $558.1 billion. The scenario was pointed out by A Gafur, director of Abdul Monem Economic Zone (AMEZ), at a virtual discussion on US-Bangladesh economic relation: Migration to a developing nation , organised by the American Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh (AmCham).

Covid: Glitches in app hit vaccination drive

Thousands of senior citizens across Bengal on Monday had to wait for hours or left without a jab from the hospital as the CoWin 2.0 app faced glitches on a day the central health ministry started vaccinating those above 60 and people aged above 45 years with comorbidities against Covid-19. The vaccination of these select groups of citizens was kicked off when Prime Minister Narendra Modi took the jab at AIIMS in Delhi on Monday morning. Sources said elderly people who wanted to get the jab at government hospitals had the option of walk-in registration, while those opting to take the vaccination at private facilities were directed to pre-register the names using the CoWin 2.0. Officials said as part of the process senior citizens aged over 60 started queuing up at various hospitals from Monday morning to register their names but glitches in the CoWin 2.0 app halted the programme.

Election Commission to verify caste papers of legislators

The Election Commission has asked the chief electoral officer (CEO) of Bengal to find out whether 14 persons, including three sitting MLAs and a sitting MP, are in possession of original Scheduled Caste certificates. The directive was in response to a complaint that Asim Kumar Hazra, the chairman of the Bangiya Scheduled Caste Welfare Association, had filed with the office of the chief election commissioner on December 16. Hazra complained that people like Burdwan East MP Sunil Kumar Mondal, and MLAs Asim Kumar Majhi and Seuli Saha of Trinamul and Dipali Biswas do not belong to the SC community. Mondal had defected from Trinamul to the BJP last month. Biswas had won on CPM ticket from Gazole in Malda district, later he joined Trinamul but recently walked into the BJP.
