April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month

City officials officially deemed April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month during Tuesday’s City Council meeting. In a proclamation read by council member Elaine Hays, the city praised Family Support Services of Amarillo for intensifying its efforts to promote public understanding of sexual violence in the community as well as highlighting the need for citizen involvement to reduce the number of incidents through education and changing public attitudes. According to a news release, Family Support Services states there are multiple ways individuals can raise awareness about sexual assault in the Amarillo community, including participating in “Paws for Consent/Cats against Cat-Calls Day” on Saturday by posting pictures of pets on social media as well as participating in “Wear Denim Day” on April 28.

Jacksonville-area housing sought for those leaving foster care

Dina Santos is only 19, but she s already lived a long life. At age 12, with her parents in the throes of addiction, she started taking care of her four younger sisters. Eventually she and her older brother, who had left home, reported the family’s situation to authorities and she and her siblings were put into foster care. Now she is a student at Florida State College at Jacksonville with law school aspirations. And she attributes her life s current upswing to ongoing support from Family Support Services of North Florida Inc., the lead agency for family preservation, foster care, adoption and extended foster care in Duval and Nassau counties.

Amarillo Globe-News The reminder that “it shouldn’t hurt to be a child” was plain to understand last week during a gathering at The Bridge Children’s Advocacy Center. On the grounds of the agency’s front lawn are more than 1,100 pinwheels. Each represents a child from within the top 26 counties of the Panhandle who needed The Bridge’s services last year. April is Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month with organizations like The Bridge, Family Support Services and the Amarillo Area CASA working tirelessly to raise awareness regarding child abuse and neglect in the region. The observation couldn’t come at a better time with the country slowly emerging from a pandemic that has lasted more than a year. The result has been numerous impacts, some of which are still not fully grasped, including the pandemic’s effect on abuse and neglect reporting following lockdowns, quarantine, isolation and remote instruction by schools.
