Those visiting Plumb Lake County Park near Sturgis in the upcoming weeks should not be alarmed if they see burned hills and fields.
County officials said the park along East Lafayette Road was control-burned Wednesday as part of a healthy-habitat regrowth plan. The burn itself took about 90 minutes to complete.
The park was control-burned for the first time mid-week by a company that specializes in projects that promote habitat growth, county officials said. A sign was erected at the east pathway entrance, explaining the effort and its benefits to the environment.
The process, also called a prescribed burn, is a carefully planned initiative monitored by trained professionals. The Plumb Lake effort removed smothering layers of dead plant material and will encourage new growth of wildflowers, officials said.
