The residents voted 227-202 in 1956 to become the Switzerland of East Long Beach and, so, for almost 70 years, they’ve been pretty content to live in a hybrid area with the county providing most services, and Long Beach pitching in for others. ....
- ADVERTISEMENT - During the event, Matthew Faulkner, executive director of the Community Hospital Long Beach Foundation, recounted the history of the facility starting in 1922 when the prominent Bixby, Bryant, Davis, Foresythe, Hastings, Tichenor and Walker families got on board with Fillmore Condit’s dream of opening a community hospital. Two years and $364,000 later, the facility opened and earned the moniker “The Miracle on Termino,” Faulkner said. For decades the facility served the community caring for the old, treating the sick and welcoming new life into the world. In attendance Thursday was retired Long Beach Firefighter Raymond Bays, who was born June 1, 1928, and is believed to be the oldest living person who was born at Community Hospital. ....
- ADVERTISEMENT - The project, approved in an 8-1 vote by the City Council Tuesday, would run along a 3-mile stretch of the river from Carson Street in the north to Atherton Street in the south. The stretch already has a bike path, but proponents said the open space concept could provide a safer environment for pedestrians as well as keep the area free of debris and encampments. Councilwoman Suzie Price, who co-authored the motion, was adamant that she would not support using city funds to get the project built but would instead push for state or county dollars. Price previously said she envisions a simplistic design with organic vegetation and a dirt walking path for pedestrians to put space between them and experienced cyclists who travel at high speeds along the river’s bike path. ....

- ADVERTISEMENT - After nearly three years, the Community Hospital Long Beach emergency department opened at noon today, marking a crucial turning point for the facility, operator Molina, Wu, Network announced. Community, the only hospital in East Long Beach, was shuttered close to three years ago by its former operator over seismic safety concerns, which the new owner must still resolve. State officials on April 29 gave the facility permission to now accept walk-in patients for the first time since being shuttered in summer 2018. The emergency department reopened with 20 beds, new medical equipment, a revamped facade, a redesigned lobby, new furniture and a new electronic patient tracking system, according to the announcement. ....
