Baffinland Iron Mines Corporation says its proposed expansion of the Mary River Mine on north Baffin Island won t cause any lasting harm to marine mammals in the area, despite concerns from some Inuit and environmentalists.
And the company says an expected $2 billion in benefits and royalties for Inuit communities over the mine s lifespan is not meant to be compensation for loss of land use or wildlife.

Tensions continue between Baffinland and Inuit leaders at an expansion hearing for the Mary River mine, but yesterday it was the organization running the technical hearing that participants were frustrated with.
As the hearing agenda falls behind on Friday morning participants were still working through Monday s scheduled presentations the Nunavut Impact Review board has begun restricting the number of questions each party can ask for Baffinland, per presentation.

At the outset of the final environmental hearings for an expansion at Nunavut s Mary River Mine, five communities in the territory s northern Qikiqtaaluk region are saying they can t support the project as it is being proposed.
For those communities especially Pond Inlet, which is nearest to the mine the primary concern is what impact a new railway and increased shipping from Milne Inlet could have on local wildlife like caribou and narwhal.

Final hearings for an expansion at Mary River Mine start in Pond Inlet, Nunavut, in two weeks, and the community’s municipal council says it is prepared to support the project if the mine owners agree to gradual production increases.

The Hamlet of Pond Inlet says a slow increase in the amount of ore shipped from Mary River Mine each year would help Inuit monitor environmental impacts.
