Giant Company expanding urban footprint with four new stores in Center City Philadelphia

The Giant Company is accelerating growth plans in one Pennsylvania city.
The Carlisle-based company announced it is opening four stores in Philadelphia, including a 32,000-square-foot Heirloom Market on Market Street in the city’s fashion district. The smaller Heirloom Market is Giant’s less traditional grocery format designed to accommodate smaller, urban areas.
In addition, the company said it will open three larger stores on Columbus Boulevard at the corner of Reed Street, North Broad Street at the corner of Spring Garden Street, and South Broad Street at the corner of Washington Avenue.

A small-format, specialty grocery format tailored to urban dwellers, Giant Heirloom Market will have its fourth Philadelphia store in the city s Fashion District.
Also under way are renovations to the Giant Direct e-commerce fulfillment center on Island Avenue, including automation from Swisslog. Giant said the facility upgrade in response to rising customer demand for online grocery shopping will provide faster order fulfillment and more order capacity, including the capability to accommodate future growth in home delivery.

Philadelphia’s effort to vaccinate those over the age of 65 just got a boost in the form of three new clinic opportunities at its health center sites. The Philadelphia Health Department has dubbed this initiative Walk-up Wednesdays.
Beginning Wednesday, April 7, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Health Center 3 Annex on Chester Avenue, the Berks Street Annex also known as Health Center 5, and Health Center 10 on Cottman Avenue will administer vaccinations to any Philadelphia resident over the age of 65 who chooses to drop by.

Amid a worrying climb in COVID-19 case counts, there is good news on the vaccination front in Montgomery County: the state sent the county its largest delivery of vaccine to date.
“For this week only, we are receiving a double shipment of the Johnson and Johnson, one-shot vaccine equaling 21,000 doses. This is in addition to the 5,850 doses of Pfizer,” said Dr. Val Arkoosh, chair of the county Board of Commissioners.
