Sturgis school board recognizes Trojan Heroes

Sturgis Journal Sturgis Public Schools Board of Education on Monday honored three teachers for their educational and personalized contributions to the district as part of the ongoing Trojan Heroes program. Jim Whitehead, Carie Arseneau and Alex Milton received recognition from the board. Superintendent Art Ebert read excerpts from nominations that were submitted. Jim Whitehead was described as  truly a caring and compassionate teacher. He is always looking for ways to solve problems and doesn t let failure get in the way, Ebert read from nomination comments. He treats students with dignity and respect while making music enjoyable for all students. He has worked to include the band in outside musical events of many kinds, exposing students to experiences they would not otherwise encounter.

Wall Elementary to get new playground equipment

Two new playgrounds are coming soon to Wall Elementary School in Sturgis. Sturgis Public Schools Board of Education on Monday approved a recommendation from school officials to buy two playground sets from Sinclair Recreation LLC of Holland. Each set will cost $200,000, for a total of $400,000. School officials noted satisfaction with previous work done by Sinclair for the district, as the company also installed the playgrounds at Congress and Wenzel elementaries. The two playgrounds will be installed to provide ease of access by students at both ends of the building, superintendent Art Ebert said. Ray Sterling, the district s director of finance, said officials will meet with Sinclair in the coming days to determine what current equipment must be removed, and which may be retained and relocated.

Sturgis Journal For the past 33 months, Art Ebert, superintendent at Sturgis Public Schools, has lived the district s motto: “We are here for you.” Although Ebert is often the face representing the district, he is quick to say his team of “hardworking and dedicated staff” are the true difference-makers behind the success of the school system. As it goes with many leadership roles, there is no “typical day for Ebert. “I many times find myself changing hats as a parent, community member or superintendent multiple times when attending an event, serving on a team, or even when going to the grocery store, Ebert said.
