BCB Spring Break 10-16 May – Please read: Action Needed After 19 years of full time broadcasting 24/7, we’ve decided that we need to set aside one week every quarter where we can stop, breathe and do some forward planning – as well as some of the important jobs that never quite get done! During each of these weeks i.e. once every three months, we will not be broadcasting any new or live programmes. Instead we’ll be broadcasting pre-recorded/timeless/archive programmes that we’ll schedule in advance of the week. This will mean that there’ll be some changes to the usual schedule.

Jim Bird, known as Dickie, died peacefully on November 23, aged 90. Born in Wales, Jim moved to Ryedale as a young boy with his parents, brothers Stuart and Joe, along with sister Rose. The family lived at Swinton Grange where his dad was a stockman. After leaving school Jim completed an engineering apprenticeship, before he was called up for National Service. Based at RAF Scampston in Lincolnshire, home of the Dambuster Squadron, Jim, who played a variety of instruments, including the euphonium, double bass and tenor horn, joined the camp band during basic training before completing a successful audition to fill a vacancy in the Bomber Command line-up.

Ian Beesley has shared his collection of images of people carrying out jobs from a bygone age, from sites including mills, across the Bradford district from the 1970s and 80s. They are: carders, casters combers, fettlers, doffers, liggers, tatlers, fitters, burlers, menders, sorters, weavers, spinners, porers, corers, patternmakers, stampers, mulespinners, winders, dyers, bleachers, scourers, warpers, plate layers, roadrunners, capsteamers, tip stretchers, hood turners, fitters, balers, packers and quenchers.
