Date Time Search to resume for man swept off break wall at Coffs Harbour Police are about to resume a search for a man believed swept into seas off Coffs Harbour yesterday. Emergency services were called to the Coffs Harbour southern break wall about 6pm (Thursday 21 January 2021), responding to reports a man had disappeared while walking along the pathway. Officers attached to Coffs/Clarence Police District attended and began searching the area, assisted by Marine Area Command, Marine Rescue, NSW Ambulance, Westpac Lifesaver Helicopter and Coffs Harbour Lifeguards.

BOM issues hazardous surf warning

Premium Content Subscriber only Dinged surfboards, broken rods, damaged boats and injured bodies - if not pride - are all good reasons to heed the hazardous surf warning from the Bureau of Meteorology. On Wednesday January 21, a hazardous surf warning for the Byron Coast has been issued for the next 48 hours. BOM Meteorologist Melody Sturm said the waves are likely to be deceptively strong and anyone venturing out should think twice. Off shore we could see 2.5m to 3m with a high period which means powerful surf even though it might not look it from the beach, she said. So especially at exposed areas, the waves could catch you off guard.

More severe storms and wild weather on the way

Premium Content Subscriber only Sure, the blue skies and sunshine might look calming but trust us, according to the Bureau of Meteorology, more wild weather is on the way. On Tuesday afternoon BOM Meteorologist Melody Sturm said residents and visitors in Northern NSW should be prepared for severe weather later on Tuesday and on Wednesday. There have been a few thunderstorms over the Northern Rivers and along the border with Queensland, she said. Across the same areas there is a thunderstorm possibility for Tuesday and again on Wednesday. The BOM is predicting for the rest of Tuesday a partly cloudy afternoon with a high (80 per cent) chance of showers, most likely during the afternoon and evening and the chance of a thunderstorm during this afternoon and evening.
