Contractor Umbrella News: Financial services sector on the way to recovery
With financial services roles seeing a significant drop in demand at the start of the pandemic, the sector is now well underway for a recovery.
Using data provided by VacancySoft, research from the Association of Professional Staffing Companies (APSCo) revealed that hiring within the financial services sector was down 58% in Q2 2020.
However, numbers improved by the end of the year, with recruitment levels up 15.2% year-on-year in December 2020.
Unsurprisingly, due to the ongoing requirement for tech professionals to manage remote working practices since the start of the pandemic, IT specialists were the most in demand across the financial services sector – vacancies rose from 30% in 2019 to 33% in 2020 for this group.

Contractor Umbrella News: Liz Barclay named as new Small Business Commissioner
Liz Barclay, an experienced business advocate and former journalist, has been named as the first female Small Business Commissioner with the task of tackling late payments.
With SMEs accounting for two-thirds of UK private sector employment and more than half of business turnover, late payments can really damage their income, which can lead to job losses and business closures.
Recent research from the Association of Independent Professionals and the Self-Employed (IPSE) has shown that 36% of self-employed workers have been affected by an increase in late payments during the pandemic.

Contractor Umbrella News: Government urged to extend business rates relief
With the UK’s smaller sized firms set to see their business rates bills reimposed, the government is being urged to extend this to 2022 in order to help those struggling financially during the pandemic.
The FSB is also calling on the government to help by increasing the number of SMEs who are able to claim business rates relief by moving the threshold to £25,000 and establishing a revenue test, so business rates relief is extended to those within the supply chain who have been affected by the pandemic.

Contractor Umbrella News: Pandemic resulted in hiring dropping 22% in 2020
A report looking at the impact of Covid-19 on UK hiring revealed that the global pandemic resulted in a 22% drop in vacancy numbers during last year.
Broadbean Technology’s report also found that London’s recruitment saw a 32% decrease during 2020 and although ICT jobs saw a significant rise in demand during certain points of the year, overall these roles dropped 24% in comparison to the previous year.
Alex Fourlis, Managing Director at Broadbean Technology commented, “With the country under some form of restrictions for the majority of 2020 we absolutely expected there to be an impact on hiring numbers, however, in the circumstances, a 22% decline overall suggests that the UK can weather this storm relatively well.
