LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 28, 2021) The University of Kentucky Center for Service-Learning and Civic Engagement is excited to share three programs that provide students with potential summer and 2021-2022 academic year paid internship opportunities.
Summer Civic Leader Program
The first of these programs, the Summer Civic Leader Program, provides Federal Work-Study eligible students with the opportunity to work for eight paid hours per week with a community organization, nonprofit organization or government agency. These opportunities could be in Lexington or your hometown. In addition to the work you will complete through your internship, students will also attend professional development sessions, allowing them to grow both professionally and personally with a cohort of their peers. A virtual screening of the film will be available to the public March 17-24. UK will host a Q&A session March 24.
LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 15, 2021) In celebration of Women’s History Month, the University of Kentucky Appalachian Center and the UK Lewis Honors College will host a virtual screening and discussion on a film about writer and social justice advocate Lillian Smith.

In addition to the film, a Q&A session and discussion will take place 3-4:15 p.m. Wednesday, March 24, on Zoom, featuring the filmmaker Hal Jacobs and actor Brenda Bynum. Attendees are encouraged to watch the film ahead of time and then join the discussion. Register here.
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 22, 2021) The University of Kentucky Appalachian Center will showcase the work of student researchers through its Sharing Work on Appalachia in Progress (SWAP) series this semester.
This series will feature presentations from graduate and undergraduate students covering topics ranging from poetry to cancer research to education to local foods.
“We are excited to be able to help fund important interdisciplinary research conducted by students across the university,” said Kathryn Engle, associate director of the center. “These presentations will provide a platform for students to share their work with the UK Appalachian Studies community, as well as the general public.
