Hardin, Clark Scholars named at honors recognition banquet

The Hardin and Clark Scholars, the top academic honors at Midwestern State University, and other outstanding students were named during a virtual Honors Recognition Celebration April 12.
Autumn Fredline was named Hardin Scholar. Fredline is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in English, Sociology, and Political Science. The Hardin Scholar is the university’s highest award for academic excellence and was begun in 1962 by the Hardin Foundation. It is presented each spring to a student during his or her senior year and a $3,000 scholarship award is given with the honor.
Fredline is a member of Sigma Tau Delta, Voices editing team, and the Redwine Honors Program at MSU Texas. She has attended the National Model United Nations where she worked to develop position papers and secure delegation awards. Fredline is also a research assistant in Foreign Trade Consultancy, and she is a tutor and a writing center peer mentor
Entries are now open for the 2021 ABC Young Performers Awards, one of Australia’s most prestigious awards for young classical musicians.
The competition re-emerges from hiatus in a new online-only format to accommodate social distancing restrictions. Finals will be live-streamed on ABC Classic in November, 2021.
Roland Gridiger OAM, CEO of the Music & Opera Singers Trust (MOST) the body that took over management of the awards in 2016 says COVID-19 precautions have left many young musicians with few opportunities for performance and exposure.
“We decided that we should present a digital competition … to try to help those instrumentalists that have been confined to home, or haven’t had jobs, exposure, or haven’t had the chance to really take up their instruments and perform,” said Gridiger.

Once judging was complete, students from the Amity School District came through with 3 gold keys, 1 silver key, and 2 honorable mention. Among those receiving recognition were:
Jenny Liu, Grade 12, of Woodbridge, received the Gold Key in Painting
Olivia Russo, Grade 12, of Orange, received the Gold Key in Drawing and Illustration
Sydney Cohen, Grade 12, of Woodbridge, received an Honorable Mention for Mixed Media.

The 2021 season also features a new collaboration with Musica Viva s Artist in Residence, visual artist and poet Judith Nangala Crispin, a descendant of the Bpangerang people. She will work throughout the company during the course of 2021.
