Head of membership, community and insight Nikki Insley explains.  Community action has been a lifeline for many people during the coronavirus pandemic, with local charities and social enterprises offering vital services when they were needed most. But these all come at a cost – and with fundraising activities disrupted by Covid-19, many local organisations are at crisis point. 

Waltham Abbey charity providing vital support for young people

The charity s gardening project is a great way to help young people de-stress This year was supposed to be one of celebration for Waltham Abbey Youth 2000, but it became one of the most challenging for the charity since it was set up 26 years ago. The coronavirus pandemic meant that instead of celebrating the anniversary the charity, which provides a wide range of services for young people and their families, had to close down its facilities including its youth clubs and parent drop-in sessions. But, thanks to a grant from Essex Community Foundation s Coronavirus Response and Recovery Programme and support from other organisations, Waltham Abbey Youth 2000 has been able to continue its vital counselling service for young people, which has been needed more than ever.

Baby Stuff Braintree: Baby banks inundated with requests during pandemic

GROUPS set up to help struggling families with vital items for new-born babies and children have been “inundated” with requests. Baby banks across Essex, including Baby Stuff in Braintree, have seen an increase in the number of parents needing support since the start of the pandemic. Parents can use baby banks for the essential equipment required to raise and take care of young children. Everything from nappies and shampoo to prams and pushchairs can be given out to those with a referral from a nursery, school, doctor, or community centre. Andy Warpole, head of programmes at the Essex Community Foundation, said: “We have seen a big increase in applications from baby banks in the past year.
