Harris responsible tourism call ahead of staycation surge

The Isle of Harris has launched a responsible tourism campaign as travel restrictions ease. Two community land trusts in Harris – the North Harris Trust and West Harris Trust – in partnership with the local tourism organisation Outer Hebrides Tourism, have been working hard in preparation for the anticipated staycation boom . While tourism bodies and operators are very keen to welcome visitors back once again, they also recognise the importance of striking a balance between visitors enjoying the best of the islands “whilst at the same time holidaying in harmony with the local environment and local communities”. A visitor management plan for Harris funded by NatureScot, including comprehensive consultation with the local community and tourism industry representatives, highlighted  five key areas of concern. Sign Up The north coast of Sutherland is in danger of hosting an unprecedented “wall of  turbines” if proposed wind farms are added to existing and approved ventures, a public local inquiry heard. The probe is into RWE Renewables UK’s planning application to build and operate 13 turbines eight kilometres south of Strathy. The Strathy Wood site lies between SSE’s 33 turbine development at Strathy North and its 39-turbine Strathy South scheme, which has approval. Among the objectors is Wildlife, the nature conservation company bankrolled by Danish billionaire landowner Anders Povlsen.

ONLY an election win for Scottish Labour can guarantee a national recovery and build a stronger, fairer post-pandemic Scotland, Anas Sarwar said today. The Scottish Labour leader set out the party’s top 50 pledges for the next term of Parliament ahead of Thursday’s Holyrood election. Mr Sarwar unveiled his five-point recovery plan with a focus on jobs, the NHS, education, climate change and communities in order to help rebuild Scotland.  In its manifesto, Labour has also pledged that everyone on furlough will access training to develop skills, as well as a jobs guarantee for every young Scot. Mr Sarwar also revealed plans to invest in a national training fund and a business restart fund.
