TOKYO, July 29 (Xinhua) The first gold medals for New Zealand and Ireland at the Tokyo Olympics both came in the rowing regatta here on Thursday. Two-time world champions Kerri Gowler and Grace Prendergast of New Zealand came from behind to win their first Olympic gold in the women s pair competition. The duo were part of the New Zealand team that finished fourth in women s eight at Rio 2016, and this time they bagged home a gold medal in six minutes and 50.19 seconds. Vasilisa Stepanova and Elena Oriabinskaia finished 1.26 seconds behind to win the silver for the Russian Olympic Committee. Canada s world champions Caileigh Filmer and Hillary Janssens, who beat the New Zealanders at the 2018 World Championship, had to settle for bronze in 6:52.10, despite leading the first 1,000m.
James Cracknell has lavished praise on the Irish duo. Paul must ve wanted to finish this with his brother but he had to form a new relationship, he told the BBC. Both crews have raced well because the Italians have been nip and tuck with these three, the Irish and the Germans, all year. I think both the Germans and the Irish stepped up for that final.

Britain s two-time gold medallist Helen Glover has ruled out another Olympics rowing bid after the mother-of-three s hopes of a fairytale finish at Tokyo 2020 were dashed.
Glover, 35, and Polly Swann, 33, finished fourth in the women s pair. In Rio I said it was my last one. This time I m saying no, it s definitely it , said Glover.

Helen Glover and Polly Swann missed out on a fairytale finish to their story as they finished fourth in the women s pair on a frustrating morning for Team GB.
It was fourth too for fellow British rowers Emily Craig and Imogen Grant as they fell shy of the medals by just 0.01sec in the lightweight women s double sculls, while in the pool James Wilby placed sixth in the men s 200m breaststroke final.
