The Indonesian government has agreed to revise four articles in a controversial cyberlaw that church and rights groups say is repressive and open to abuse.
Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Mahfud MD said on June 8 that amendments would be made to articles 27, 28, 29 and 36 of the Electronic Information and Transactions (ITE) law. ....

South, Southeast Asian Nations Lag in Protecting Minorities, US State Dept Says

Although constitutions of South and Southeast Asian countries provide for equality of faiths, governments do not always protect the rights of minority groups, the U.S. State Department said in its 2020 International Religious Freedom Report released on Wednesday.
The American commitment to defending freedom of religion and belief goes back centuries – and continues today – Secretary of State Antony Blinken said as he announced the publication of the 2,397-page document covering 200 countries and territories.
“Religious freedom, like every human right, is universal. All people, everywhere, are entitled to it no matter where they live, what they believe, or what they don’t believe,” Blinken told reporters. ....

Veronica Koman challenges Jakarta's different stands on Burma and Papua


Human rights lawyer Veronica Koman has challenged the contrasting positions taken by the Indonesian government in response to calls to resolve the Papua problem and in its response to the military coup in Myanmar.
Koman said Indonesia’s position on the Myanmar coup had been very good, but not its attitude on the Papua issue.
“It’s funny, Indonesia pays no attention to international pressure to resolve the conflict in Papua, but has the courage to stand up to Myanmar, which is actually a very good move”, said Koman during a webinar held by the Milk Tea Alliance Indonesia last Sunday. ....
