When Steve Douglas was a budding ecology student, a quarter of a century ago, he discovered what turned out to be a new species of tree on a street corner just a few hundred metres from his home in Sydney’s Hills District.
“It was more a case of driving past it [than walking by],” Dr Douglas, now a private ecologist said.
The multi-trunk tree was, on closer inspection, not a common scaly bark eucalyptus like a neighbouring tree. ....

A popular walking and bike track in Sydney’s south west continues to expand thanks to $268,000 in funding as part of the NSW Government’s Metropolitan Greenspace Program.
Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Rob Stokes today announced the opening of the latest 1.5km addition to the Macarthur Regional Recreational Trail in the Australian Botanic Garden at Mount Annan.
“Active transport links involving cycleways and pedestrian paths are so important for our growing city and this investment provides a better connection for locals and visitors to enjoy,” Mr Stokes said.
“The 416-hectare Australian Botanic Garden is looking spectacular as we head into Autumn and this new track means more people can access and enjoy this scenic landscape. ....
